Senna Patta - Sanay Leaves - Senna Leaf - Sonamukhi Leaves - Sona Patta
What is Senna Patta or Sonamukhi Leaf (Senna Alexandrina):
Senna Patta, also known as Sonamulkhi or Senna Alexandrina is a deciduous shrub that grows up to 3 metres tall. It is one of the world's most commonly used laxatives, with a very long history of use dating back thousands of years. It is cultivated in many tropical areas, especially India, for its leaves and pods.
Senna is the leaf of the plant Senna alexandrina. It is approved in the US as a laxative for short-term treatment of constipation. Senna contains many chemicals called sennosides. Sennosides irritate the lining of the bowel, which causes a laxative effect.
Senna is an FDA-approved over-the-counter (OTC) laxative. It is used to treat constipation and also to clear the bowel before procedures such as colonoscopy. People also use senna for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hemorrhoids, weight loss.
Other Names: Sanaa Patta, Swarnapatri, Sonmukhi, Sonamakhi Leaves, Sonamukki, Sunamukhi, Sunamuki, Sunamukhi, Sonapatti, Sanaypatti, Sunamukhi, Cassia Angustifolia
Uses:
Constipation is a common, uncomfortable problem. It can make you feel bloated, uncomfortable and, of course, not very good about yourself. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what's causing your constipation because there are so many things that can cause it. That's why we recommend trying senna (from the plant Senna alexandrina) as a first step.
Senna is an FDA-approved nonprescription (OTC) drug for adults and children ages 2 years and older. It should be taken at bedtime and tends to work within 6-12 hours. It might cause stomach upset and diarrhea. Senna should not be used for more than 1 week without the supervision of a healthcare provider.
Senna is used to relieve occasional constipation in adults and children. This medicine is a laxative.
Benefits:
- Senna is a natural medicine that's used to treat constipation, diarrhea, and other symptoms of a bowel movement. It comes in pill form and can be taken by mouth.
- Senna is LIKELY SAFE for most adults and children over age 2 when taken by mouth, short-term. Senna is an FDA-approved nonprescription medicine. Senna can cause some side effects including stomach discomfort, cramps, and diarrhea.
- Senna is POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken by mouth long-term or in high doses. Don't use senna for more than two weeks. Longer use can cause the bowels to stop functioning normally and might cause dependence on laxatives. Long-term use can also change the amount or balance of some chemicals in the blood (electrolytes) that can cause heart function disorders, muscle weakness, liver damage, and other harmful effects.
